Interns at the Records & Archives Department

Interns Jennifer Seymour and Matthew Jones have been assisting the Records & Archives Staff with valuable projects. Both Jennifer and Matthew are undergraduate students at Ohio State Newark. Jennifer is majoring in history, and Matthew is majoring in English.

In 2011, Jennifer organized hundreds of files from the Tuberculosis Sanitorium, which operated in Licking Country from 1932 to 1967. These files contain Diagnostic Chest Chart records, which provide information about tuberculosis patients such as dates of birth, current and former places of residence, occupations, possible sources of infection, histories of illnesses, present symptoms, the results of physical examinations and sketches of masses in the patients’ upper bodies. Jennifer also created a database of patients’ names and associated information, and she wrote a finding aid which explains the arrangement of the records and their value to researchers. Currently Jennifer is creating a list of the county officials who have been elected in Licking County.

During January through March 2012, Matthew created hundreds of digitized images of Licking County Death Certificates from 1905 to 1908. These death certificates provide information about the deceased which is valuable to genealogists and others, such as the names of parents, birth and death dates, causes of death and occupations. Matthew used a Canon camera and Atiz BookDrive software. Matthew also catalogued some documents from the Licking County Recorder’s Office, making it easier to locate and understand those materials.

Jennifer and Matthew have done excellent work, and we are very grateful to them for their assistance. If you are a college student and would like to gain intern experience with us, please contact us at tel. 740-670-5121.
